When we think of vitamin D, what do we think of? Sunshine? Mood? That little pill
that’s on our counter, but we never remember to take it? These are all accurate, however
there are so many more benefits to vitamin D and it plays a crucial role in our foundational
health.
Vitamin D is essential for: testosterone production, immune function, bone density,
and calcium absorption. Low vitamin D levels can lead to depression, a compromised
immune system and in some extreme cases, osteoporosis. Exposing yourself to sunlight is a
great way to increase vitamin D, however in most cases, our skin isn’t completely exposed
as we have clothing on. So, either we go outside completely nude on a daily basis, which if
you’re able to, do it, or we can look into some other strategies.
Supplementation of vitamin D3 is a non-negotiable that everyone should be
doing, especially if you live in colder climates. The best way to take vitamin D3 is in liquid
form, so dosing can be done higher easily, and you want to make sure that it’s combined
with vitamin K, as the body won’t absorb the vitamin D3 properly without it. Another method
used to increase vitamin D is to purchase a red light lamp and sit in front of it 10-20 min per
day.
At the end of the day, assess don’t guess. Although it’s very likely that the majority
of the population is deficient in vitamin d, I still recommend getting tested to see for yourself.
Get blood work done to identify whether or not you are deficient in vitamin D and create an
action plan from there.
